\u201cWhen I was leaving, he [Anton Raaff] thanked me very politely; I on my part ensured him that I will arrange this aria for him in such a way that it will be a pleasure for him to sing; because I like an aria to be exactly matched to the singer, just like a well-tailored piece of clothing…\u201d \u2013 wrote Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in his letter dated 28 February 1778. It should be emphasized, however, that the famous composer not only conformed to singers\u2019 preference, but also found inspiration in their vocal skills, he was fascinated by the human voice.<\/p>\n

As such, vocal and instrumental music, in a somewhat natural way, occupies a special place in Mozart\u2019s work. Although it is mostly associated with brilliant sacral works, and above all \u2013 with opera, throughout his life Mozart also composed numerous interesting songs an arias. He wrote them throughout his entire life. His first original arias come from the 1760s, when he composed Conservati fedele\u00a0<\/i>KV 23 and some other works as a mere 10 year old boy. In line with the convention of a monumental aria, the work is a concert of sorts for the singer, allowing him an opportunity to show off. It\u2019s worth noting that this piece reveals first traits of the composer\u2019s exceptional dramatic talent. In Ombra felice\u00a0<\/i>KV 255, written over a decade later, we can see a bit more mature way of expression.<\/p>\n

Subsequent Mozart\u2019s songs and arias display various phases of the genre\u2019s development \u2013 starting with simple dance forms to complicated dramatic scenes. However, all these works show us the genius composer\u2019s creative individualism, as well as extraordinary lightness, grace, and expression. The passionate aria Bella mia fiamma\u00a0<\/i>KV 528, written for J\u00f3zefa Du\u0161ek, or the sentimental Vado, ma dove? oh Dei!\u00a0<\/i>KV 583, created with Louise Villeneuve in mind, just like the most famous 1789 songs \u2013 e.g. Abendempfindung\u00a0<\/i>KV 523, An Chloe\u00a0<\/i>KV 524,\u00a0Veilchen\u00a0<\/i>KV 476,\u00a0Lied der Trennung\u00a0<\/i>KV 519 \u2013 are fully mature lyrical emanations overflowing with emotions. The breathtaking liltingness of the melody, the ease of the accompaniment, the noble sound, and the perfection of the form \u2013 these are the characteristic features of these small masterpieces.<\/p>\n
