Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755) was one of the few 18th-century composers who could write music without having to count on the generosity of wealthy patrons. His works gained so much popularity that they brought him not only fame but also money. In 1724, he received a special royal privilege – the lifelong right to print and sell the sheet music of his compositions. Among the first titles that came off the Parisian press in that same year was the cycle of cantatas Les 4 saisons.

The first one – Spring (Le printemps) – is a tribute to the French tradition and its love of dance and ornamentation. In the delightful arias, one can hear, among others, the song of a cuckoo, dance rhythms, and drone bass notes, which emphasize the pastoral character of the composition. It is the apotheosis of nature coming to life and the awakening of love. In the subsequent parts of the cycle, the composer draws on the achievements of Italian masters as willingly as he does on the French style, proving his extraordinary melodic inventiveness and harmonic sense. After the Summer (L’été), a time of reverie and hard work, comes the joyful Autumn (L’automne) with its promise of revelry, and finally the most complex in terms of dramaturgy and sound, Winter (L’hyver).
